1. Engine Knock: Characteristics and Mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Knock in SI engines limits both power density and fuel conversion efficiency. The main mechanisms with the potential to generate the cylinder pressure fluctuations generally observed during knocking combustion are discussed. It is reasoned that some mechanisms of flame acceleration can further amplify a shock wave generated by autoignition. LÄS MER
2. The role of Landau-Darrieus instability in flame dynamics and deflagration-to-detonation transition
Sammanfattning : The role of intrinsic hydrodynamic instability of the premixed flame (known as Landau-Darrieus instability) in various flame phenomena is studied by means of direct numerical simulations of the complete system of hydrodynamic equations. Rigorous study of flame dynamics and effect of Landau-Darrieus instability is essential for all premixed combustion problems where multidimensional effects cannot be disregarded. LÄS MER
3. Turbulent burning, flame acceleration, explosion triggering
Sammanfattning : The present thesis considers several important problems of combustion theory, which are closely related to each other: turbulent burning, flame interaction with walls in different geometries, flame acceleration and detonation triggering. The theory of turbulent burning is developed within the renormalization approach. LÄS MER
4. Fronts and instabilities in laser ablation, organic semiconductors and quantum media
Sammanfattning : The concept of a front plays a decisive role in various elds in physics and beyond. In the present thesis we study key aspects of front dynamics and stability in the context of laser plasmas, organic semiconductors and quantum media. LÄS MER
5. Small Particles with Big Impact : Structural Studies of Viruses and Toxicological Studies of Nanodiamonds
Sammanfattning : Nanoparticles (NPs) can be found everywhere and their existence has both beneficial and harmful consequences for the environment and living beings. The investigations on which this thesis is based upon have contributed to an increased understanding of some of these particles and to the development of a method that could be used to study their structure.
