1. Interactions between Bacteria and Fungi on Aquatic Detritus – Causes and Consequences
Sammanfattning : Bacteria and fungi dominate the decomposition of aquatic plants, a major process in the carbon and nutrient cycling in many aquatic systems. Although phylogenetically distant, bacteria and fungi often live in close proximity with each other. Since these microorganisms also have similar ecological functions, interactions have developed between them. LÄS MER
2. Effects of solar radiation on the abiotic and bacterially mediated carbon flux in aquatic ecosystems
Sammanfattning : In this Thesis, I studied some of the current aspects of organic matter photochemistry. I analyzed abiotic phototransformations of several types of dissolved (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM). I also evaluated the effects of phototransformation of several types of DOM on bacteria. LÄS MER
3. Coarse detritus in oligotrophic lake littoral zones : utilization by intervertebrates and contribution to carbon flow
4. Revealing the role of shredders and detritus in open-canopy, intermittent streams
Sammanfattning : Many streams run through naturally-unforested, agricultural, and residential landscapes and thus do not have closed riparian canopies. Little is known of food web dynamics and ecosystem function in such open-canopy streams. LÄS MER
5. Solar radiation effects on decomposition and decomposers of plant litter in lakes
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarizes the results of a series of experiments, from test tube up to field study scale, performed to increase the understanding of solar radiation effects on decomposition and microbial decomposers of plant litter in stagnant water of littoral zones. In conclusion, I suggest that fungi play a significant role in the decomposition of plant litter submersed in lakes, and that their distribution is dependent on detritus quality and water chemistry, but also tends to be inversely related to the occurrence of bacteria attached to the litter.
