  1. 1. Transitional design histories

    Författare :Maria Göransdotter; Johan Redström; Kjetil Fallan; Molly Wright Steenson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; design; design research; design theory; design history; history of design; industrial design; participatory design; co-design; user-centered design; Scandinavian design; Swedish design; history of ideas; design; designforskning; designteori; designhistoria; industridesign; deltagande design; samskapande; användarcentrerad design; skandinavisk design; svensk design; folkhemmet; idéhistoria; design; design; industrial design; industridesign; idé- och lärdomshistoria; History Of Sciences and Ideas; History; historia;

    Sammanfattning : Design practices are to a large degree conceptually and methodologically based in ways of designing rooted in the 20th century. Some of the challenges that arise in contemporary design stem from an unawareness of design’s historicity, and the discrepancies between what design methods and concepts once were made to handle, and what we presently try to apply them to. 2. 2. The science of imagining solutions : design becoming conscious of itself through design

    Författare :Søren Rosenbak; Johan Redström; Carl DiSalvo; Andrew Morrisson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; design; pataphysics; possibility; imaginaries; imagination; the artificial; critical practice; critical design; speculative design; design fiction; participatory design; smart cities; lies; metadata; surveillance; failures; research through design; constructive design research; practice-based design research; programmatic research; epiphenomenology; quantum poetics; design; design; industrial design; industridesign;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation addresses a paradox in design: we currently live in a day and age that is fundamentally conditioned by artifice on all scales, and principled by a deep sense of contingency and possibility. In this world, anything could always be something else. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Aesthetics of being together

    Författare :Stoffel Kuenen; Erik Stolterman; Johan Redström; Dag Svanæs; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; design; interaction design; design theory; aesthetics; aesthetics of being together; aesthetics of interaction; design practices; design research practice; research through design; practice based research; constructive design research; social media; technological mediation; social platforms; digital interactions; social interaction; group interaction; social dynamics; perceptual crossing; intersubjectivity; Aesthetics; estetik; design; design;

    Sammanfattning : Design deals with matters of aesthetics. Historically, aesthetics in industrial design refers to the designed artifact: aesthetics of objects. When designed artifacts include digital technologies, aesthetics in design refers to what happens between people and artifacts as well: aesthetics of interaction. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Moving decolonially in design for sustainabilities : spaces, rhythms, rituals, celebrations, conflicts

    Författare :Nicholas B. Torretta; Johan Redström; Brendon Clark; Andrea Botero Cabrero; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Design; decolonization; sustainability; Capoeira; movement; decolonising design; design for sustainability; pluriverse; pluriversality; industrial design; design; design;

    Sammanfattning : As design attempts to tackle environmental and social issues, it has found itself intertwined with and bound to an oppressive global paradigm that has created the problems in the first place. Consequently, the effort of disentangling design from its current paradigm has been gaining attention under the emerging focus of decolonising design (Mareis and Paim, 2020; Tlostanova, 2017) and design for pluriversality (Escobar, 2018; Noel, 2020). 5. 5. Opening Up Design : Engaging the Layperson in the Design of Everyday Products

    Författare :Guido Hermans; Erik Stolterman; Ron Wakkary; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; democratisation of design; toolkits; 3D printing; layperson participation; post-phenomenology; research through design; design; design;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation in industrial design focuses on the gap between the context of design and the context of use. It aims to open up design to the layperson and investigate an active role for the layperson in the design of everyday products. LÄS MER
