1. On droplet interactions and suspension flow
Sammanfattning : Micron to millimetre sized droplets, precisely generated or sustained in controlled environment, have great potential in myriads of engineering applications functioning as the basic element to assemble metamaterials, deliver drugs, host surfactant, reduce friction and damp turbulence. The interaction of droplets from pairwise to collective levels is the most important factor in controlling these processes, yet little is known about the detailed mechanisms in various nonideal conditions. 2. Influence of carbides and nitrides on corrosion initiation of advanced alloys : A local probing study
Sammanfattning : Advanced alloys often present precipitated carbides and nitrides in their microstructure following exposure to elevated temperatures. These secondary phases are usually undesirable, because potentially deleterious for the corrosion and mechanical performances of the material. LÄS MER
3. Hydrophobic surfaces: Effect of surface structure on wetting and interaction forces
Sammanfattning : The use of hydrophobic surfaces is important for many processes both in nature and industry. Interactions between hydrophobic species play a key role in industrial applications such as water-cleaning procedures and pitch control during papermaking but they also give information on how to design surfaces like hydrophobic mineral pigments. 4. Super resolution optical imaging – image analysis, multicolor development and biological applications
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on super resolution STED optical imaging. STED provides a wealth of new informational content to the acquired images by using stimulated emission to surpass the diffraction limit in optical fluorescence microscopy. LÄS MER
5. Variability and adaptation in the contractile system of smooth muscle
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the large diversity of the contractile properties in smooth muscle. Six studies, I-VI, are included. I: a slow smooth muscle (aorta) has a different nucleotide and phosphate dependence compared to a fast type (taenia coli). LÄS MER
