  1. 1. The role of young-of-the-year fish in lake ecosystems

    Författare :Pia Romare; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrobiology; Rutilus rutilus; Perca fluviatilis; diet-dependent growth; density dependent growth; behavioural cascade; 0 fish behaviour; horizontal echo sounding; biomanipulation; trophic cascade; predation pressure; young-of-the-year fish; trophic interactions; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Food chain theory is based on consumption; that is, presupposing that the only important interaction between organisms is that they actually meet in an unstructured environment and that one of them is consumed. Recently, studies, including biomanipulation projects, have indicated that trophic interactions are more complex than predicted by food chain theory. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Identification of novel growth hormone-regulated factors

    Författare :Björn Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Growth hormone; idiopathic short stature; growth hormone deficient; prepubertal; children; genomic; proteomic;

    Sammanfattning : The studies described in this thesis aimed to identify novel factors involved in the regulation of longitudinal growth and bone mineralization in response to growth hormone (GH) treatment. This was done by performing a single factor study (Paper I) where it was found that growth response was negatively correlated with adiponectin levels during the first year of GH treatment in short prepubertal children. 3. 3. Ontogenetic scaling and the development of within-cohort size structure

    Författare :Magnus Huss; Lennart Persson; Pär Byström; David Post; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cannibalism; competition; density-dependence; resource feedbacks; hatching; growth; ontogenetic niche shifts; Perca fluviatilis; size variation; larval fish; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : It is increasingly recognized that individuals of the same species differ from each other and influence and respond to their environment in unique ways. This thesis deals with size variation among individuals that not only are of the same species but also of similar age. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Age-class interactions in Atlantic salmon and brown trout: Effects on habitat use and performance

    Författare :Rasmus Kaspersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :competition; inter-cohort; density-dependence; growth; habitat; Salmo trutta; Salmo salar; salmon; trout;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the underlying mechanisms and the density-regulatory effects of age-class interactions, using juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) as study species. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Forest-stream linkages : Experimental studies of foraging and growth of brown trout (Salmo trutta L)

    Författare :Pär Gustafsson; Eva Bergman; Larry Greenberg; John Armstrong; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Brown trout; diet; growth; riparian zone; forest-stream linkages; terrestrial invertebrates; light; primary production; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Riparian vegetation along streams and rivers affects the aquatic community in numerous ways and often operates as a link for energy flux between forest and streams. The studies presented in this licentiate thesis focus on light and terrestrial invertebrates, two factors influenced by riparian zone structure, which potentially affect stream ecosystems and thus also brown trout (Salmo trutta).
