1. Eating difficulties in elderly, focusing on patients with stroke
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to describe eating difficulties and interventions to improve eating among elderly patients, especially those with stroke, to make comparisons between patients with dysphagia and those without (Papers I & II), those with and without assisted eating (Paper IV), and to analyse the relation between eating difficulties, nutritional status (Papers II-V), pressure ulcers (Paper IV), length of hospital stay and levels of independent living when discharged (Paper V). Eating difficulties were mainly assessed using structured observations. LÄS MER
2. Sensorimotor Brain Plasticity in Stroke Patients with Dysphagia : A Methodological Study on Investigation and Treatment
Sammanfattning : AimsThe aims of the thesis were to validate investigation instruments for stroke patients with dysphagia, and to improve oropharyngeal dysphagia therapies.Methods/ResultsA Lip Force Meter, LF 100, affirmed excellent intra- and inter-reliability, sensitivity and specificity. LÄS MER
3. Timing of respiration and swallowing events during deglutition
Sammanfattning : Background: Dysphagia is a common symptom that can be due to disease, but can also occur without a known cause. Today, we know that the coordination of swallowing and respiration is essential for a safe swallow. Swallowing consists of several subsecond events. To study these events, it’s important to use modalities with high temporal resolution. LÄS MER
4. Impairment of intra-oral sensation, discrimination ability, and swallowing function following radiotherapy and surgery for oral and pharyngeal cancer
Sammanfattning : Oral and pharyngeal cancer is commonly treated with a combination of radiotherapy and surgery. It is a clinical knowledge that patients often experience severe swallowing disorders following treatment. Since surgical sequelae are instantaneous and obvious, little attention has been paid to other concurrent effects of the treatment. LÄS MER
5. Exploring the role of rheology in bolus flow using an in-vitro approach
Sammanfattning : Swallowing disorders, termed ‘dysphagia’, are more common in the elderly but can also affect younger persons. Approximately, 8% of the world’s population suffers from dysphagia. A Texture Modified Diet (TMD), which increases bolus viscosity to adjust for the sluggish bolus handling mechanism, is the most common intervention. LÄS MER
