  1. 1. Microbial life deep underground : From anaerobic cultures to reconstructed genomes

    Författare :George Westmeijer; Mark Dopson; Hans Røy; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Continental deep biosphere; microbial ecology; anaerobic enrichment cultures; Candidatus Desulforudis audaxviator; Thiobacillus denitrificans; flow-cells; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The deep biosphere refers to the vast ecosystem of life beneath the Earth’s surface, residing in the fractured bedrock and pores of rocks, largely isolated from solar energy. These fractures enclose an important reservoir of groundwater that contains microorganisms active in processes such as the uptake of inorganic carbon, sulfur cycling, or the degradation of organic matter. 2. 2. Structure and function of microbial communities in acid sulfate soil and the terrestrial deep biosphere

    Författare :Xiaofen Wu; Mark Dopson; Ricardo Amils; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molecular phylogeny; acid sulfate soils; metal; acidophiles; deep biosphere; oligotrophy; biofilm formation; metagenome; binning; metabolism; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the use of different DNA sequencing technologies to investigate the structure and function of microbial communities in two extreme environments, boreal acid sulfate soil and the terrestrial deep biosphere.The first of the two investigated environments was soils containing un-oxidized metal sulfides that are termed ‘potential acid sulfate soil’ (PASS) materials. 3. 3. Diversity of aquatic viruses from genes to host interactions

    Författare :Emelie Nilsson; Karin Holmfeldt; Martha Clokie; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial ecology; bacteriophage; ‘omics; isolation; host range; temporal variation; deep biosphere; Baltic Sea; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Viruses are the most numerous entities on Earth, and can be found in all waters. In aquatic ecosystems, viruses are key players since they alter the way energy and nutrients are transferred by killing larger organisms. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Exposing the Dark Microbial Biosphere

    Författare :Valerie Hubalek; Stefan Bertilsson; Alexander Eiler; Tim Urich; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Dark biosphere research has been widely neglected, although by volume this biome comprises the lion’s share of habitats on our planet. In these systems the main metabolic strategies are of chemotrophic nature, leading to gradual depletion of redox gradients essential for sustaining life. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fossilized microorganisms in volcanic rocks from sub-seafloor environments

    Författare :Magnus Ivarsson; Nils Holm; Sten Lindblom; Curt Broman; Harald Furnes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microfossils; hydrothermal systems; deep biosphere; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap; Mineralogy; Petrology and Geochemistry; mineralogi; petrologi och geokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Fossilized microorganisms are focused in this thesis. Such organisms have been observed in drilled basalt samples from the Emperor Seamounts in the Pacific Ocean collected during ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) Leg 197. LÄS MER
