  1. 1. Functional Traits in Sphagnum

    Författare :Fia Bengtsson; Håkan Rydin; Gustaf Granath; Cronberg Nils; Sari Juutinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peat mosses; functional traits; NPP; decay resistance; N2 fixation; desiccation resistance; climate; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 2. 2. High-Performance Composites from Modified Wood Fiber

    Författare :Mats Westin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Kraft lignin; fiberboard; lignocellulosic fiber; durability; wood fiber; mechanical properties; dimensional stability; decay resistance; acetylation; composite;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of this work was to produce and evaluate high-performance wood fiber composites. High-performance was defined as: high dimensional stability and a high durability, including resistance to wood-decaying organisms (fungi, bacteria, and insects). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Wood Plastic Composites made from Modified Wood : Aspects on Moisture Sorption, Micromorphology and Durability

    Författare :Kristoffer Segerholm; Ove Söderström; Magnus Wålinder; Mats Westin; Pia Larsson Brelid; Per Johan Gustafsson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Wood plastic composites; WPC; acetylation; heat treatment; furfurylation; moisture sorption; micromorphology; decay; UV laser; soil test; Biomaterials; Biomaterial;

    Sammanfattning : Wood plastic composite (WPC) materials have seen a continuous market growth worldwide in the last decade. So-called extruded WPC profiles are today mainly used in outdoor applications, e.g. decking, railing and fencing. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Microstructural Decay in High-Strength Bearing Steels under Rolling Contact Fatigue

    Författare :Tania Loaiza; Peter Hedström; Mårten Olsson; Steve Ooi; Prasath Babu; Harry Bhadeshia; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Microstructural decay; microscopy; rolling contact fatigue; Hybrid 60 steel; Bearing steel; 52100; dislocations; ferrite microbands; Mikrostrukturell nedbrytning; mikroskopi; rullande kontaktfatigue; Hybrid 60-stål; dislokationer; Materials Science and Engineering; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis aims to enhance our understanding of material decay in high-strength steels used for bearing applications. The primary objective is to investigate the microstructural changes in two high-strength steels: 52100 steels, a popular bearing steel, and Hybrid 60, a relatively new bearing steel designed for long fatigue life and use at elevated temperatures. 5. 5. Studies of drug resistance in minor HIV quasispecies

    Författare :Halime Ekici; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The main objective was to study drug resistance mutations (DRM) in the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) gene of minor HIV-1 quasispecies, not detectable with standard techniques. Sensitive allele-specific PCR (AS- PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were developed to study resistance to drugs of relevance in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC); the nucleoside analogue RT inhibitor (NRTI) lamivudine (3TC) and the non-nucleoside RT inhibitors (NNRTIs) efavirenz (EFV) and nevirapine (NVP).
