11. Acquisition of reference to self and others in Greek Sign Language : From pointing gesture to pronominal pointing signs
Sammanfattning : This dissertation explores the emergence of the linguistic use of pointing as first- and non-first-person pronoun in Greek Sign Language. Despite the similarity in form between the pointing gesture and pronominal pointing signs, children acquiring sign language pass through the same stages and acquire personal pronouns at about the same age as children acquiring spoken language. Sammanfattning : This dissertation deals with the two languages of the deaf, sign language and Swedish. The aim of the dissertation can be expressed in four questions:• What ideas about the deaf and his or her education were influential during various time periods from 1809 to 1990 and what were the reactions of the deaf to the influence of these ideas?• What were the opinions of the teachers on introduction of bilingual education?• What was the pattern of communication in the schools for the deaf when bilingual education was introduced?• What function is fulfilled by bilingualism in the recognition of the deaf from an equality perspective?Four historical periods are analysed. 15. Retinal function in deaf-blind syndromes
Sammanfattning : A variety of disorders can cause retinal degeneration and hearing impairment, and it is of great value to have an early diagnosis since there is a large variation in phenotype and prognosis both within and between the different disorders. The general aim of this thesis was to characterize the retinal function, to describe the phenotype, and – where appropriate – to relate the phenotype to genotype in patients with combined visual and hearing impairment.
