1. Radiation response in human cells : DNA damage formation, repair and signaling
Sammanfattning : Ionizing radiation induces a range of different DNA lesions. In terms of mutation frequency and mammalian cell survival, the most critical of these lesions is the DNA double-strand break (DSB). DSB left unrepaired or mis-repaired may result in chromosomal aberrations that can lead to permanent genetic changes or cell death. LÄS MER
2. Damage accumulation and stiffness degradation in composite laminates
Sammanfattning : In the presented thesis analytical modeling of elastic properties degradation and modeling of damage evolution in composite laminates is performed. Transverse cracking initiation on a fiber/matrix level is briefly studied by testing model composites and cross-ply laminates. LÄS MER
3. Damage Segregation and Cellular Rejuvenation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sammanfattning : The process of aging is defined as a time-dependent decline in cellular functionality, and aging is thought to have evolved as organisms were optimized for reproduction, at the cost of an imperfect repair and maintenance system. As a consequence, different kinds of dysfunctional components and damage accumulate over time. LÄS MER
4. Development of a Morphology-based Analysis Framework for Asphalt Pavements
Sammanfattning : The morphology of asphalt mixtures plays a vital role in their properties and behaviour. The work in this thesis is aimed at developing a fundamental understanding of the effect of the asphalt morphology on the strength properties and deformation mechanisms for development of morphology-based analysis framework for long-term response prediction. 5. Rolling Contact Fatigue of Railway Rails with Emphasis on Crack Initiation
Sammanfattning : Increased traffic density and the heavier axle loads of modern trains have led to severe problems with rolling contact fatigue (RCF) which cause initiation of surface cracks in railheads. In this thesis, a specific type of surface crack, the head check, is studied numerically with emphasis on fatigue crack initiation. LÄS MER
