1. Rates and patterns of molecular evolution in avian genomes
Sammanfattning : Evolution is the change in inherited characteristics of a population through subsequent generations. The interplay of several evolutionary mechanisms determines the rate at which this change occurs. LÄS MER
2. Comparative Genomics in Birds
Sammanfattning : To shed light on forces that shape the molecular evolution of bird genomes, and in turn avian adaptations, comparative analyses of avian DNA sequences are important. Moreover, contrasting findings in birds to those of other organisms will lend a clearer view on general aspects of molecular evolution. LÄS MER
3. The evolution of sex chromosomes and sex-linked sequences in birds
Sammanfattning : Identifying the processes involved in the evolution of suppressed recombination between sex chromosomes and understanding their consequences for the evolutionary dynamics of sex-linked loci have been major topics of research during the last century. In this thesis, I used the avian ZW system, where females are the heterogametic sex, to investigate the underlying processes in sex chromosome evolution in birds. LÄS MER
4. Nucleotide Substitution Patterns in Vertebrate Genomes
Sammanfattning : The rates and patterns at which nucleotide substitutions occur vary significantly across the genome sequence of vertebrates. A prominent example is the difference in the rate of evolution of functional sequences versus nonfunctional (neutrally evolving) sequences, which is explained by the influence of natural selection on functional sequences. 5. Birds as a Model for Comparative Genomic Studies
Sammanfattning : Comparative genomics provides a tool to investigate large biological datasets, i.e. genomic datasets. In my thesis I focused on inferring patterns of selection in coding and non-coding regions of avian genomes. LÄS MER
