1. Targeting cytotoxic species in amyloid diseases
Sammanfattning : Amyloid diseases are a world-wide problem causing great human suffer and large economical costs. Although amyloid deposits, a common denominator in all amyloid disorders, are detrimental to the surrounding tissue, there is a poor correlation between total amyloid burden and clinical symptoms. 2. Structure and Activity of Circular Plant Proteins : Cytotoxic Effects of Viola Cyclotides
Sammanfattning : Cyclotides are a family of small and macrocyclic proteins that have been found in Violacaee and Rubiaceae plant species. These proteins contain a cystine knot: two disulfides bonds together with their connecting peptide backbone form an embedded ring which is penetrated by a third disulfide bond. LÄS MER
3. Distribution and Chemical Diversity of Cyclotides from Violaceae : Impact of Structure on Cytotoxic Activity and Membrane Interactions
Sammanfattning : During the last decade there has been increased interest in the cyclotide protein family, which consist of a circular chain of approximately 30 amino acids, including six cysteines that form three disulfide bonds, arranged in a cyclic cystine knot motif. This thesis gives new insights in cyclotide distribution and occurrence in the plant family Violaceae, structure-activity relationships for cytotoxic effects, membrane disruption and adsorption on lipid membranes, and evaluates toxicity and anti-tumor activity in vivo. 4. Reactive oxygen species as signalling molecules in immunity
Sammanfattning : Cytotoxic lymphocytes such as natural killer (NK) cells and subsets of T cells are key components of the host defense against malignancy and infection. Earlier studies have demonstrated that NK cells and several phenotypes of T cells become dysfunctional and apoptotic after exposure to autologous monocyte/macrophages and other phagocytes. LÄS MER
5. Cytotoxic Compounds of Plant Origin – Biological and Chemical Diversity
Sammanfattning : The development of resistance by tumour cells to chemotherapeutic agents is a major problem in cancer treatments. One way to counter this is to find compounds with cytotoxic mechanisms other than those of drugs in clinical use today. LÄS MER
