1. Genetic analyses of multiple myeloma and related plasma cell dyscrasias
Sammanfattning : Acquired genetic changes have proved to be of diagnostic and prognostic importance in different hematologic malignancies as well as in some solid tumor types. However, although multiple myeloma (MM), an incurable disease, and its proceeding stage monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) are quite common, little is known about the karyotypic features of these plasma cell dyscrasias. 2. Cytogenetic studies of primary and metastatic breast cancer
Sammanfattning : A series of primary and metastatic breast carcinomas obtained from female and male patients were cytogenetically analysed. Trisomy 12 was identified as a recurrent and sometimes early event in breast carcinogenesis. LÄS MER
3. Genetic studies on cardiovascular disease - identification of novel drug targets
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to identify novel potential drug targets of cardiovascular disease with a focus on G-protein coupled receptors. We identified a common genetic variant of the ATP receptor P2Y11, where an alanine is substituted with a threonine at position 87 of the P2Y11 receptor that increases the risk of developing acute myocardial infarction. 4. A new perspective on avian phylogeny - a study based on mitochondrial genomes
Sammanfattning : The Class Aves (birds) is generally divided into two main groups - the Palaeognathae and the Neognathae. Paleognathous birds are the flightless ratites and the tinamous, while Neognathae include all other extant birds (more than 9,000 species). LÄS MER
5. On the binding of growth-promoting polyamines to proteoglycans: Implications for growth-regulation and polycation-mediated gene transfer
Sammanfattning : Initial investigations were directed at studying the interaction between polyamines and various glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The polyamine spermine displayed binding to dermatan sulphate (DS) and heparan sulphate (HS) with similar (Kd, 3.9 x 10-4 M) and higher (Kd, 0.37 x 10-6 M) affinity, respectively, than to DNA. LÄS MER
