Sammanfattning : Over the past few decades, the rapid development of information communication technology, internationalization and globalization worldwide have required a shift in the focus of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) towards competence in intercultural communication in which the role of culture in the acquisition of CFL and in the pragmatic use of the language is emphasized and promoted. Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to describe and analyse customs of science teaching in secondary schools and teacher education programmes in Sweden in relation to the notion of “inquiry” in science education. The main focus is on customs of language use and the educational goal of learning about scientific inquiry as distinct from the related goals of learning to do inquiry and learning canonical science content. Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to critically examine opportunities and obstacles to develop teaching in Swedish as a second language on equal ground. This is done by ethnographically exploring a group of students’ and their teachers’ lived experiences of language and teaching practices in a school and society in northern Sweden’s peripheralized interior.
