1. Ground beetle dynamics in intensively managed agricultural landscapes
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I have focused on studying dynamics of ground beetle assemblages in intensively managed agricultural landscapes. By definition, the land cover of these landscapes is dominated by annually tilled farmland, comprising a range of different crop types, in the context of the southern Swedish province of Scania mostly winter wheat, spring barley, winter rapeseed, and sugar beets. 2. Crop diversification across scales : implications for resource use and cropping systems sustainability
Sammanfattning : The industrialization of agriculture and efforts to maximize yields of commodity crops are major drivers of biodiversity loss and disruption of ecosystems balance. To become more sustainable, agriculture needs to be aligned with the delivery of multiple ecosystem services, and reduce its dependency on external inputs and its negative environmental impacts. 3. Diversifying crop rotations for sustainable production and climate change adaptation
Sammanfattning : Industrial cropping systems are increasingly simplified, with fewer crops being grown, requiring extensive use of inputs, and contributing to environmental pollution and climate change. Solutions are needed to reduce the negative effects, while retaining productivity in the face of increasingly frequent detrimental climatic conditions. LÄS MER
4. Understanding crop and farm management : links to farm characteristics, productivity, biodiversity, marketing channels and perceptions of climate change
Sammanfattning : Agriculture faces challenges in meeting rising demand for food, feed, fibre and fuel while coping with pressure from globalisation, limited natural resources and climate change. Farmers will choose management practices based on their goals and available resources and these practices will influence farm performance. LÄS MER
5. Integrating legumes in mixed crop-livestock systems in east Africa: Farmers' perceptions, ecosystem services and support for decision making
Sammanfattning : Challenges faced by smallholder farmers in east Africa include limited access to inputs, small farm sizes, and erratic rainfall patterns. Legume intensification and species diversification have been recommended for improving food and nutritional security, controlling soil erosion, improving soil fertility, supplying income and providing fuel.
