  1. 1. Hyperinflammation in critically ill

    Författare :Tatiana von Bahr Greenwood; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: A wide spectrum of inflammatory responses, with overlapping characteristics, is encountered in critically ill patients in intensive care. At one extreme, critically ill patients may develop the potentially fatal condition secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH), characterized by excessive inflammation (hyperinflammation), driven by a ‘cytokine storm’, and multiple organ failure. 2. 2. Glutamine kinetics in critically ill patients

    Författare :Marie Smedberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Critical illness, defined as a life-threatening organ failure, entails an extreme stress that results in a pathophysiology of its own. The abnormal metabolism of these patients causes a severe muscle wasting that is poorly understood. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Strain echocardiography in the critically ill patient : Studies in patients with septic shock and subarachnoid haemorrhage

    Författare :Keti Dalla; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Strain echocardiography in ICU patients; Left ventricle; Right ventricle; Septic shock; Subarachnoid haemorrhage; Norepinephrine;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, strain echocardiography by two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging (2D-STI), was used for the evaluation of left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function in critically ill patients with septic shock and subarachnoid haemorrhage. The aims were to: 1) investigate the value of strain echocardiography for the early detection of LV and RV dysfunction not diagnosed with conventional echocardiography in severe sepsis and septic shock, 2) to study the effects of norepinephrine on RV systolic function and pulmonary haemodynamics in patients with norepinephrine-dependent septic shock 3) evaluate the use of strain echocardiography for detection of myocardial injury in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) and 4) study the impact of general anaesthesia and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) on RV and LV myocardial longitudinal strain. 4. 4. Inter-hospital transports of critically ill children

    Författare :Tova Hannegård Hamrin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : There is an increasing need for inter-hospital transports of seriously ill children as a result of centralization of intensive care for children to dedicated pediatric intensive care units (PICU). This thesis has explored the short-and long-term outcomes of critically ill children after transport by a specialized pediatric transport team to a PICU. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Skeletal muscle metabolism in critically ill patients

    Författare :Lena Gamrin-Gripenberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The loss of skeletal muscle mass is of importance for the length of the hospital stay and recovery in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). In the acute illness, the export of amino acids from skeletal muscle provides substrates for vital functions and thus enhances survival. LÄS MER
