1. Factors influencing emission fluxes and bacterial enrichment in sea spray aerosols : Insights from laboratory and field studies
Sammanfattning : Sea spray aerosol (SSA) is one of the major natural aerosol sources and is produced when wave breaking entrains air into ocean surface water, which subsequently breaks up into bubbles. These bubbles rise to the surface and can scavenge biogenic material. LÄS MER
2. Contrasting language-in-education policy intentions, perceptions and practice : the use of English and Kreol Seselwa in the Seychelles
Sammanfattning : Many studies have shown that Second Language (L2) Medium of Instruction (MoI) policies in Africa are linked to educational inequity, substandard teaching practice, low literacy skills and poor overall academic performance. In the light of this background, this thesis aims to make a more thorough inquiry into questions related to language-in-education policies, L2 as MoI, and academic success in the Seychelles, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean. 3. Excessive Seas : Waste Ecologies of Eutrophication
Sammanfattning : This dissertation researches how perspectives in western industrial societies communicate about and give meaning to environmental degradation through case studies on the causes and effects of cultural eutrophication—namely nutrient pollution, algal blooms, and dead zones—in the Baltic Sea. Utilizing this approach, this dissertation addresses the ecological problems of cultural eutrophication in marine ecosystems by exposing normative claims humans make about the Baltic Sea and its contents as well as detailing how seas that exceed human expectations may offer insights into negotiating differing perspectives, discrepancies in power, and ways of being among humans and non-humans in marine environments. 4. Small-amplitude steady water waves with vorticity
Sammanfattning : The problem of describing two-dimensional traveling water waves is considered. The water region is of finite depth and the interface between the region and the air is given by the graph of a function. We assume the flow to be incompressible and neglect the effects of surface tension. LÄS MER
5. Studies of the Arctic Ocean sea ice cover and hydrothermal heat fluxes
Sammanfattning : Since reliable ice extent estimates from satellite data became available in 1979 the Arctic sea ice cover has followed a declining long term trend. Over the last decade the decline has accelerated with record low sea ice extents recorded in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2012. LÄS MER
