6. Obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular morbidity
Sammanfattning : Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 24 % of middle-aged men and 9 % of women in USA but the treatment criterion, daytime sleepiness is reported by 17 and 22 % of these subjects, respectively. Some previous studies have suggested an association between OSA and cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the conclusions have been conflicting due to co-existing traditionally recognized risk factors. 7. Health economics and its measures in rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Objectives: To study: (I) the impact on cost-utility analyses of applying different national EuroQol 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D) preference sets; (II and III) whether, in methotrexate-refractory, early rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the addition of infliximab results in superior health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and may be considered cost-effective, as compared to adding sulfasalazine and hydroxychloroquine; (IV) how costs relate to disability (measured by the health-assessment questionnaire, HAQ), disease activity (28-joint disease activity score, DAS28) and HRQoL (EQ-5D) in RA. Methods: In the observational SSATG register, one-year quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) accumulation of two interventions was compared according to the UK, US, or Danish EQ-5D preference sets. 8. Internet-based treatment of stress urinary incontinence : treatment outcome, patient satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness
Sammanfattning : Background Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing, or on exertion. It affects 10-35% of women, and can impair quality of life (QOL). First-line treatment is pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT). However, access barriers and embarrassment may prevent women from seeking care. LÄS MER
9. Quality of Life in Adult Patients with Growth Hormone Deficiency : Bridging the gap between clinical evaluation and health economic assessment
Sammanfattning : The goals of this thesis are to evaluate quality of life (QoL) in adult patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in relation to population normative data, to construct a preference-weighted index (utility) from a disease-specific QoL measure and to assess it in a clinical context. The study included samples from the general population and patients with GHD from four European populations: England & Wales, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. 10. On the necessity of screening and national registration of congenital cataracts
Sammanfattning : Objectives: The overall aim of this thesis was to contribute to improvements in the management of congenital cataract by defining the most efficient screening procedure, examining the magnitude of the morbidity rate, optimizing the timing of surgery by relating surgical outcome to age at intervention and severity of visual deprivation and furthermore by evaluating costs versus consequences of introducing the most efficient screening procedure found, on a national basis. Methods: Paper I: 72 children born between 1992 and 1998 in the Stockholm County Council region, Västra Götaland and Halland county, Linköping-Motala, Malmö, and Lund, who had surgery for congenital cataract before the age of one year were included in a retrospective study.
