  1. 1. Histopathological and neuroimaging studies in partial epilepsy with emphasis on malformations of cortical development

    Författare :Sofia Eriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epilepsy; epilepsy surgery; multiple pathology; malformations of cortical development; microdysgenesis; morphometry; diffusion tensor imaging;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the first part of the present study was to describe the whole Göteborg epilepsy surgery series between 1987 and 1995 with respect to surgical procedures, histopathological findings and clinical correlates. We found a high proportion of malformations of cortical development (MCD) and patients with MCD were studied in further detail in the following studies. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On surgical techniques to increase bone density and volume. Studies in the rat and the rabbit

    Författare :Christer Slotte; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; autogeneic bone; bovine bone mineral; calvaria; cortical perforation; guided bone augmentation; maxilla; microangiography; morphometry; rabbit; rat; tibia; titanium implants; vessel topography;

    Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND. Various techniques of surgical intervention have been suggested to promote bone densityand volume; however, the predictability of such techniques is not always sufficiently supported by preclinicalevaluations.AIM. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Brain anatomical correlates of perceptual phonological proficiency and language learning aptitude

    Författare :Mikael Novén; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prosody; word accent; MRI; language learning aptitude; cortical morphometry; diffusion kurtosis imaging;

    Sammanfattning : The present dissertation concerns how brain tissue properties reflect proficiency in two aspects of language use: the ability to use tonal cues on word stems to predict how words will end and the aptitude for learning foreign languages. While it is known that people differ in their language abilities and that damage to brain tissue cause loss of cognitive functions, it is largely unknown if differences in language proficiencies correlate with differences in brain structure. 4. 4. Structural and functional changes in the brain after surgically repaired median nerve injury

    Författare :Per F. Nordmark; Roland S. Johansson; Henrik Ehrsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Humans; Hand; Touch; Peripheral nerve injury; Magnetic resonance imaging; Somatosensory Cortex; Cortical plasticity; fysiologi; Physiology; handkirurgi; hand surgery;

    Sammanfattning : Despite the best available surgical repair, traumatic median nerve injury within the forearm typically causes lifelong impairment in hand function. This stems from an inadequate reinnervation of the nerves supporting sensory functions of the thumb, index and long finger, and of nerves supplying intrinsic hand muscles. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Temporal dynamics of brain plasticity : characterizing brain structural changes during skill acquisition

    Författare :Tomás Mediavilla; Daniel Marcellino; Alexandra Badea; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Motor learning; brain plasticity; structural plasticity; magnetic resonance imaging; voxel-based morphometry; tractography; connectivity; motor cortex; posterior parietal cortex; cerebellum; vesicular glutamate transporter;

    Sammanfattning : Traditionally, structural plasticity in the human brain has been considered to follow a linear or asymptotic increase over the course of training. However, recent studies using structural MRI revealed transient increases in grey matter volume (GMV) with learning. LÄS MER
