  1. 1. Persistency, bioaccumulation and toxicity assessment of selected brominated flame retardants

    Författare :Jenny Rattfelt Nyholm; Patrik L. Andersson; Peter Haglund; Mats Tysklind; Walter Vetter; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; persistence; bioaccumulation; toxicity; biodegradation; biotransformation; PBT; read across; soil; earthworm; zebrafish; copepod; BFRs; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; tetrabromobisphenol A; hexabromocyclododecane; hexabromobenzene; 2; 4; 6-tribromophenol; tetrabromobisphenol A; 2-hydroxyethyl ether; 1; 2-dibromo-4- 1; 2-dibromoethyl cyclohexane; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Sammanfattning : Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are chemicals used in e.g. electronic equipment, textiles and plastics for the prevention of fire. Over recent decades, concern has been raised regarding some heavily used BFRs, since the levels in the environment have been increasing. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Copepods in Skeletonema-dominated food webs : Toxicity and nutritional quality as factors controlling copepod-diatom interactions

    Författare :Roswati Md Amin; Ulf Båmstedt; Sigrun Jónasdóttir; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Copepod-diatom interaction; toxicity; nutritional quality; Skeletonema;

    Sammanfattning : My thesis focuses on copepod-diatom interactions, specifically on the effects of food quality and toxicity on copepod feeding, reproductive success and behavior but as a frame, also includes a quantitative evaluation of copepod carbon requirements compared to other trophic plankton groups. My aim was to evaluate the function of copepods in diatom-dominated spring blooms. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Zooplankton growth and trophic linkages : Implications for fish feeding conditions in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Towe Holmborn; Elena Gorokhova; Sture Hansson; Ilppo Vuorinen; Stockholms universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this Thesis was to improve our understanding and assessment of feeding conditions for zooplanktivorous fish in the Baltic Sea.We investigated (papers I, II) the usefulness of biochemical proxies for assessments of growth and metabolic rates in the dominant Baltic copepod Acartia bifilosa. 4. 4. Summer cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea - implications for copepod recruitment

    Författare :Hedvig Hogfors; Sture Hansson; Wim Kimmerer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Calanoid copepods; Food web interactions; Harmful algae blooms; Zooplankton; Nodularin; Allelopathy; Baltic Sea; Biochemical markers; RNA-based indices; Acidification; Global Climate Change; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : During summer, the Baltic Sea is subjected to the world’s largest cyanobacterial blooms. These blooms are linked to eutrophication and raise many questions concerning their effects on the ecosystem. To understand their impacts on the food web dynamics, it is essential to assess growth responses of grazers to these cyanobacteria. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Pigment and Thiamine Dynamics in Marine Phytoplankton and Copepods

    Författare :Ingrid Wänstrand; Pauli Snoeijs; Marianne Pedersén; Helmut Hillebrandt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; phytoplankton composition; pigments; chemotaxonomy; inorganic nutrients; pelagic copepods; grazing; astaxanthin; thiamine; mesocosm experiments; marine food webs; eutrophication; Baltic Sea; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Based on a field study and several mesocosm experiments, I evaluated the use of pigments as chemotaxonomical biomarkers for phytoplankton community composition in the Baltic Sea and I examined effects of inorganic nutrients on the dynamics of carotenoids and thiamine (vitamin B1) at the phytoplankton–copepod level in marine pelagic food webs. My results show that HPLC pigment analysis combined with CHEMTAX data processing was an accurate alternative to microscopic analysis of Baltic Sea phytoplankton. LÄS MER
