1. Regeneration in continuous cover forestry systems
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the studies underlying this thesis has been to qualify and quantify the regeneration of tree species in a range of typical growing environments of possible Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) silvicultural systems in boreal forests of northern Sweden. Data presented in Papers I and II show that the light environment did not differ significantly between points at different distances to trees, but it was clearly affected by the stand stem density (SSD). 2. Carbon Balance Implications of Forest Biomass Production Potential
Sammanfattning : Forests in boreal and temperate forest-ecosystems have importance for carbonbalance since they sequester large amount of atmospheric carbon by uptake ofcarbon-dioxide during photosynthesis, and transfer and store carbon in the forestecosystem. Forest material can be used for bio-fuel purposes and substitute fossilfuels, and supply wood products, which can replace carbon-and-energy-intensivematerials. LÄS MER
3. Individual-tree-selection in uneven-sized Norway spruce stands in southern Sweden : Developments of tools for simulation and optimization
Sammanfattning : Individual-tree-selection (ITS) is a continuous cover forestry method that aims to utilize the uneven-sized stand structure through optimized individual tree selections. ITS is an interesting management alternative to rotation forestry in terms of production of multiple benefits and forest owner profitability. LÄS MER
4. Silviculture adapted to multiple goals in Swedish small scale forestry : methods for choosing practices, biotopes, stands and events
Sammanfattning : During recent decades a new type of private forest owner has appeared in Sweden, with forestry goals other than simply generating money from wood production; these goals include hunting, maintaining biodiversity, cultural aspects and historical values. However, multiple goals often conflict with each other, leading to a problem of finding practices that can deliver several goals at the same time. LÄS MER
5. Improving boreal forest regeneration in a variable climate
Sammanfattning : Regeneration of boreal forests in Sweden mainly involves planting Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings on clear-cut areas, although there is an increasing interest in planting broadleaves and in applying continuous cover forestry (CCF). LÄS MER
