  1. 1. Analysis of human epidermal Langerhans' cells and allergens with confocal laser scanning microscopy

    Författare :Axel Emilson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :3-D analysis; allergen; allergic contact dermatitis; basal cellcarcinoma; Bet v I; birch; confocal laser scanning microscopy; epidermis; HLA-DR; image analysis; invariant chain; irritant contact dermatitis; Langerhans cell; occlusion; P. orbiculare;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the thesis was to explore confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) as a tool for 1) quantitative and 3-dimensional (3-D) analysis of the human antigen-presenting Langerhans' cell (LC) in epidermis and 2) for localization of allergens in yeast cells and in birch pollen. Epidermal LCs were investigated after occlusion with patch tests and in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) skin. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Structure Evolution during Phase Separation and Gelation of Biopolymer Mixtures

    Författare :Niklas Lorén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microstructure; gelatin maltodextrin; biopolymer mixtures; structure evolution; phase separation; stereology; confocal laser scanning microscopy; image analysis; spinodal decomposition; transmission electron microscopy; gelation;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the kinetics of phase separation and gelation in aqueous mixtures of gelatin and maltodextrin. The structure evolution of these mixtures at different length scales was recorded by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microstructure was quantified by image analysis. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Structure evolution of phase-separated EC/HPC films for controlled drug release

    Författare :Pierre Carmona; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; electron microscopy; coarsening; cellulose; phase separation kinetics; drug delivery; phase separation mechanisms; porous film; biopolymer; controlled drug release; confocal laser scanning microscope; spin-coating.;

    Sammanfattning : Porous phase-separated ethylcellulose/hydroxypropylcellulose (EC/HPC) films are used to control drug transport out of pharmaceutical pellets. The drug transport rate is determined by the structure of the porous films that are formed as the water-soluble HPC leaches out. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Harnessing Mesoporous Spheres - transport studies and biotechnological applications

    Författare :Jovice Boon Sing Ng; Lennart Bergström; Frank Caruso; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mesoporous; spheres; particles; CLSM; TEM; controlled-release; molecular transport; lipid membrane; enzyme; intraparticle; lipase; solid support; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi; materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Sammanfattning : Applications in controlled release and delivery calls for a good understanding of molecular transport within the carrier material and the dominating release mechanisms. It is clear that a better understanding of hindered transport and diffusion of guest molecules is important when developing new porous materials, e.g. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Foam Formation and Starch Gelatinization with Alpha-Crystalline Emulsifiers

    Författare :Gisela Richardson; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik; image analysis.; rheology; microscopy; amylose-lipid complex; gelatinization; dynamical arrest; amylose; starch; sponge cake; foam; emulsifier; alpha-gel; physical state;

    Sammanfattning : In the baking industry, emulsifiers in the alpha-gel state are used for foam formation. This thesis focuses on some parts of the effects of the emulsifier: how the foam formation and foam stability are influenced by the physical state of the emulsifier, how emulsifiers change the gelatinization and gel formation of starch, and the impact that these factors may have in a true product such as a sponge cake.
