Syftet med avhandlingen är att analysera populärkulturella förestiillningar om manlig sjukdom och maskulinitet, det vill säga att fånga relationen mellan manlighet och sjukdom på en medierad arena för att se vilken betydelse ohälsa tillskrivs och vilken funktion den fyller i gestaltningen av maskulinitet.
