  1. 11. Studies on Potency and breadth of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV neutralizing antibody responses

    Författare :Gülsen Özkaya Sahin; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV-2; SIV; envelope; neutralizing antibody; breadth; potency; IgG; IgA; complement; antibody-dependent complement-mediated inactivation; virus evolution; diversity; divergence;

    Sammanfattning : Even though the relative contribution of neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to prevent progression to AIDS during HIV-1 infection is still unclear, the induction of broadly NAb directed against HIV-1 through vaccination is considered to represent an important goal for the development of HIV-1 vaccines. Factors contributing to the induction of NAb may include the strength and duration of antigenic stimulation, the preservation of CD4+ T and B cells, the conformation of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex (Env), and the evolution of Env during infection. 2. 12. Complement in Autoimmunity - the importance of clearing waste

    Författare :Jonatan Leffler; Malmö Proteinkemi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; annexins; apoptosis; Complement system; neutrophil extracellular traps; systemic lupus erythematosus; C1q; factor H; histones;

    Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease where improperly cleared apoptotic cells and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) induce an autoimmune response. Complement is crucial to prevent SLE by tailoring immune responses and opsonizing dead cells but may also induce inflammation and tissue damage once the disease is initiated. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Effect of Surface Nanotopography on Blood-Biomaterial Interactions

    Författare :Natalia Ferraz; Marjam Ott; Jaan Hong; Jan Carlsson; Tom Eirik Mollnes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nanoporous alumina; nanotopography; biomaterial; platelets; complement system; macrophages; whole blood; inflammatory response; Chemistry; Kemi; Immunobiology; Immunbiologi; Immunologi; Immunology; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Sammanfattning : Biologically inspired materials are being developed with the aim of improving the integration of medical implants and minimizing non-desirable host reactions. A promising strategy is the design of topographically patterned surfaces that resemble those found in the extracellular environment. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Studies of the pathogenesis of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli-induced hemolytic uremic syndrome

    Författare :Ida Arvidsson; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; EHEC; hemolytic uremic syndrome; Shiga toxin; complement; hemolysis; microvesicles; cathelicidin;

    Sammanfattning : Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is characterized by non-immune hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute kidney failure. The most common form of HUS is associated with gastrointestinal Shiga toxin-producing enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection. EHEC are non-invasive strains with Shiga toxin as the unique virulence factor. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Studies on surface proteins of Gram-positive bacteria

    Författare :Robert Janulczyk; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ABC transport; complement; surface protein; Gram-positive; Streptococcus pyogenes; Streptococcus pneumoniae; Klinisk biologi; Clinical biology;

    Sammanfattning : Despite the availability of antibiotics and modern health care, infectious diseases continue to cause great suffering and costs. Bacterial surface proteins are important for the interaction between host and pathogen. LÄS MER
