    Sammanfattning : The organisation of fluids in small compartments is ubiquitous in nature, such as in the cellular composition of all life. This work explores several engineering avenues where microscale fluid compartmentalization can bring novel material properties or novel functionality in life sciences or medicine. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Modification and Utilization of Nanotube-vesicle Networks

    Författare :Martin Markström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanotechnology; diffusion; network; nanotube; biomimetic; hydrogel; vesicle; compartmentalization; poly N-isopropyl acrylamide ; Marangoni; liposome;

    Sammanfattning : Methods based on self-assembly and self-organization for construction of lipid bilayer networks, consisting of vesicles (3-100 μm in diameter) connected by conduits (50-300 nm in diameter), have previously been developed. Control over network geometry, topology, content, and membrane composition has been demonstrated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Nuclear compartmentalization of viral and cellular proteins involved in gamma-herpes virus (EBV and HHV-8) mediated cellular transformation

    Författare :Karin Mattsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :EBV; HHV-8; latency; PML nuclear body; fluorescence microscopy;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the work described in this thesis has been to characterize the nuclear compartmentalization of cellular and viral proteins involved in EBV or HHV-8 mediated cellular transformation. We have studied the EBV encoded EBNA-5 and its association with the PML nuclear bodies (NBs) and nuclear inclusions. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Modulating Organ Dysfunction in Experimental Septic Shock : Effects of Aminoglycosides, Antiendotoxin Measures and Endotoxin Tolerance

    Författare :Markus Castegren; Jan Sjölin; Claes Frostell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lipopolysaccharide; animal model; pig; tobramycin; endotoxin elimination; immunoparalysis; secondary sepsis; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a common diagnose in the intensive care population, burdened with a high mortality. The systemic inflammatory reaction underlying the development of septic organ dysfunction can be modeled using Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide, endotoxin. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Dynamic aspects of nucleocytoplasmic trafficking

    Författare :Cecilia Rustum; Einar Hallberg; Urs Greber; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cellular structures and compartmentalization is the result of a dynamic steady state exchange between its components. This thesis is focused in investigations of dynamic properties of green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled proteins in live cells using confocal laser microscopy in combination with bleaching techniques such as fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence loss in photobleaching (FLIP).
