1. Ontogeny and Population Biology of a Sex-Limited Colour Polymorphism
Sammanfattning : This study has involved investigation of number of populations of the damselfly Ischnura elegans over several years, looking at frequency changes over time, morphological differences between the sexes and the morphs, differences in growth rate and development time, differences in fecundity between the morphs, and genetic differentiation between populations. 2. Population-level consequences of variation
Sammanfattning : Consequences of within population variation have recently attracted an increased interest in evolutionary ecology research. Theoretical models suggest important population-level consequences, but many of these predictions still remain to be tested. LÄS MER
3. The Preservation of Favoured Morphs in the Struggle Between Sexes
Sammanfattning : Sexual selection is particularly likely to promote population divergence, because sexual traits are expected to be subject to rapid evolutionary change. Identifying the relative roles of particular barriers to the amount of total reproductive isolation between populations or closely related species can provide important clues to the mechanisms of population divergence and speciation Phenotypic trait differences among populations are thought to reflect the interaction between the intensity of gene flow versus the strength of local selection and drift. 4. Drivers of polymorphism dynamics in pygmy grasshoppers
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I used colour polymorphism in pygmy grasshoppers as a model system to study the influence of selection, developmental plasticity, mating behaviour and gene flow on patterns of phenotypic and genetic diversity within and among populations in changing environments.Data for more than 5,000 individuals collected from natural populations showed that the incidence of black (melanic) pygmy grasshoppers was higher in burnt than in non-burnt areas, and rapidly declined over time within populations in post-fire environments. 5. Applications of Four-Colour Fluorescent Primer Extension Technology for SNP Analysis and Discovery
Sammanfattning : Studies on genetic variation can reveal effects on traits and disease, both in humans and in model organisms. Good technology for the analysis of DNA sequence variations is critical. Currently the development towards assays for large-scale and parallel DNA sequencing and genotyping is progressing rapidly. LÄS MER
