11. Neuro-immune regulation of macromolecular permeability in the normal human colon and in ulcerative colitis
Sammanfattning : Background and aim: Persistent stress and life events affect the course of ulcerative colitis (UC) by largely unknown mechanisms. Regulation of epithelial permeability to antigens is crucial for the balance between inflammation and immuno-surveillance, and increased intestinal permeability has been shown in patients with ulcerative colitis. 12. Interactions between dietary chicory, gut microbiota and immune responses
Sammanfattning : This thesis provides a better understanding of interactions between diet, gut microbiota, and immune responses to a specific dietary fiber source, chicory (Cichorium intybus L). This was achieved by examining the impact of chicory fiber on animal performance, digestibility, gut development, commensal bacteria community structure in small and large intestine, and follow-up reactions with specific immune components, cytoprotective heat shock protein (HSP) 27 and 72, in vivo and in vitro. 13. Gut derived chronic inflammation in HIV-1 and chronic kidney disease : the role of the microbial metabolite TMAO and immunomodulatory effects of Vitamin D
Sammanfattning : Persistent immune activation with premature ageing and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are features shared by HIV-1 infected individuals and patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Underlying dysbiosis, a failing mucosal barrier function and microbial translocation (MT) are contributing factors in both conditions. LÄS MER
14. Identification and characterization of WASP and FKBP-like protein
Sammanfattning : Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammation of the colon which together with the related Crohn s disease (CD) represent the major forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IBD is believed to arise in a dysfunctional intestinal barrier which allows the normal gut flora to trigger an unwanted chronic immune response in genetically susceptible individuals. LÄS MER
15. Barley malt products for improved intestinal health
Sammanfattning : Barley is a good source of dietary fibre, particularly β-glucan and arabinoxylan, to increase formation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Butyric and propionic acid are involved in the preservation of colonic barrier function, thus decreasing the risk of inflammation. LÄS MER
