1. Cellulose nanofibril materials with controlled structure : the influence of colloidal interactions
Sammanfattning : Nanoparticles are very interesting components. Due to their very large specific surface area they possess properties in between molecules and macroscopic materials. In addition, a material built up of hierarchically assembled nanoparticles could obtain unique properties, not possessed by the nanoparticles themself. LÄS MER
2. Synthesising colloidal molecules with tunable interactions from soft responsive microgel particles
Sammanfattning : Colloidal self-assembly is an attractive bottom-up approach to new superstructures and materials with new properties. However, the typical spherical shape and isotropic interaction potential limit the repertoire of ordered structures that can be obtained from synthetic colloids. LÄS MER
3. A microfluidic toolbox to fabricate, sort and characterize thermoresponsive colloidal molecules and their assemblies
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we discuss the assembly of thermoresponsive microgel particles into small clusters, and their use as colloidal molecules with specific and directional interactions. The underlying goal is to use these particles as advanced building blocks for new types of self- assembled structures with novel or vastly improved properties, and as model particles for investigating fundamental problems in condensed matter physics. 4. Active Matter in a Critical State: From passive building blocks to active molecules, engines, and active droplets
Sammanfattning : The motion of microscopic objects is strongly affected by their surrounding environment. In quiescent liquids, motion is reduced to random fluctuations known as Brownian motion. Nevertheless, microorganisms have been able to develop mechanisms to generate active motion. LÄS MER
5. Flow of Colloidal Mesophases
Sammanfattning : This dissertation presents new work and results in the flow of complex fluids and experimental methodologies for their investigation. Plate-like colloidal particles of kaolinite and nickel hydroxide are studied. A study of lamellar fragments and their mixture with the nickel hydroxide particles is also presented. LÄS MER
