1. Physiological Stress Reactivity in Late Pregnancy
Sammanfattning : During pregnancy, the basal activity is increased in both of our major stress response systems: the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. At the same time, the reactivity towards stressors is reduced. These alterations sustain maternal and fetal homeostasis, and are involved in the regulation of gestational length. LÄS MER
2. Pain influences somatosensory perception : an experimental and clinical study
Sammanfattning : The underlying mechanisms maintaining long-term pain localised to musculoskeletal structures and joints are not infrequently unknown. In routine clinical work with such patients insufficient attention has been paid to phenomena indicating altered excitability of the central nervous system (CNS). LÄS MER
3. Dynamics of descending inhibition and neuroendocrine analgesia with special reference to the trigeminal region
Sammanfattning : In patients with pain, it is of relevance to use clinical assessments that evaluate the pain modulation. In this thesis, the dynamics of descending inhibition or central sensitization and neuroendocrine analgesia were investigated: in healthy volunteers; in patients with chronic closed lock of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), before and after discectomy; and finally in patients with possible neuropathic pain, (atypical odontalgia). 4. Combined oral contraceptives : impact on the vulvar vestibular mucosa and pain mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Objective: The main aim of this thesis was to study the impact of combined oral contraceptives (COC) on the vulvar vestibular mucosa and pain mechanisms; in healthy women and in women with provoked vestibulodynia (former vulvar vestibulitis syndrome). The somatosensory perception in the vulvar vestibular mucosa of healthy women was studied with the relation to COC. LÄS MER
5. Perioperative complications in obese patients : A thesis on risk reducing strategies
Sammanfattning : Aspiration of gastric content and delayed or failed intubation are the leading causes of anesthesia-related mortality and morbidity. In the recovery period, airway obstruction with subsequent hypoxia is a relatively common cause of morbidity, and is highly associated to the amount of opioids administered, especially in obese patients.
