  1. 1. The aging brain and changes in cognitive performance : Findings from morphometry and quantitative susceptibility mapping of iron

    Författare :Ninni Persson; Håkan Fischser; Kristine B. Walhovd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; brain aging; volumes; ndividual differences; QSM; cognitive aging; iron; episodic memory; fluid-; crystalized abilities; sex differences; gender differences; psykologi; Psychology;

    Sammanfattning : Brain aging is a heterogeneous phenomenon, and this thesis illustrates how the course of aging can vary within individuals over time and between individuals as a function of age, sex, and genetic variability. We used two contrasts from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), namely spin-lattice T1-weighted imaging, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) from gradient-echo images, to picture the aging brain, by means of morphometric measures and brain-iron concentrations. 2. 2. Cognitive training in young and old adults : Transfer, long-term effects, and predictors of gain

    Författare :Petra Sandberg; Anna Stigsdotter Neeyl; Michael Rönnlund; Boo Johansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; Cognitive training; aging; old adults; executive function; life-span; individual differences; episodic memory; inhibition; shifting; updating; cognitive control; strategy training; mnemonics; predictors; Psychology; psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Aging, also in the absence of pathological conditions, is associated with cognitivedecline, especially in so called fluid abilities, such as episodic memory andexecutive functions. Due to an ongoing demographic shift, a larger part of thepopulation will reach higher ages, and more people will be affected by age-relatedcognitive decline. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Birth cohort differences in cognitive aging: Secular trends in cognitive functioning and decline over 30 years in three population-based Swedish samples

    Författare :Peter Karlsson; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Nyckelord :Aging; cardiovascular risk factors; cognitive decline; cohort differences; fluid and crystallized abilities; Flynn effect; longitudinal;

    Sammanfattning : The overarching aim of this thesis was to investigate birth cohort differences in level of cognitive functioning and change in later life in three population-based representative samples drawn from the Gerontological and Geriatric Population Studies in Gothenburg (H70), Sweden. We used data from cohorts, born in 1901-02, 1906-07, and 1930, measured at ages 70, 75, and 79 on the same cognitive measures. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Using Mobile Health Technology to Support Health-related Quality of Life : From the Perspective of Older Adults with Cognitive Impairment

    Författare :Line Christiansen; Lisa Skär; Johan Sanmartin Berglund; Peter Anderberg; Staffan Karlsson; Blekinge Tekniska Högskola; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aging; Cognitive Impairment; Cohort Studies; Dementia; Gerontechnology; Health-related Quality of Life; Independent Living; Mental Health; Mobile Health; Phenomenography; Quality of Life; Telemedicine; Tillämpad hälsoteknik; Applied Health Technology;

    Sammanfattning : The prevalence of cognitive impairment and illness increases with age. For older adults, maintaining or improving health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the early stages of cognitive impairment is important to prevent consequences related to the progression of the condition.
