1. Effects of Specific Cochlear Pathologies on the Auditory Functions : Modelling, Simulations and Clinical Implications
Sammanfattning : A hearing impairment is primarily diagnosed by measuring the hearing thresholds at a range of auditory frequencies (air-conduction audiometry). Although this clinical procedure is simple, affordable, reliable and fast, it does not offer differential information about origins of the hearing impairment. LÄS MER
2. Cochlear mechanics : design and application of superresolution techniques in the cochlear apex
Sammanfattning : Hearing is one of the five traditional senses. Next to vision it is probably the most important for man and plays a crucial role in day-to-day communication. However, hearing is extremely challenged by modern life style, due to increasing noise exposure and aging societies. Ten percent of the world population is estimated to be hearing impaired. LÄS MER
3. Atomic force microscopic studies of inner ear structure and mechanics
Sammanfattning : The transduction processes occurring in the inner ear, from sound induced vibration or head movements to nerve impulses sent to the brain, are to a large part dependent on the mechanical properties of the different components of this organ, especially the sensory hair cells. The function of the hearing organ is for example dependent on the unique mechanoelectric transduction properties of the cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs), which are able to respond to electrophysiological and mechanical stimulations by changing their shape and their mechanical properties. 4. Thyroid hormone mediates fibroblast growth factor receptor expression, which both alter cell surface mechanical properties of the mammalian cochlea
Sammanfattning : Cells in the mammalian hearing organ, the cochlea, develop a specialized patterning and cellular architecture necessary for hearing function. Cytoskeletal components, such as actin and microtubules, maintain the material and mechanical properties of these cells. LÄS MER
5. Imaging the organ of Corti in vitro and in vivo
Sammanfattning : Recent developments in imaging techniques, namely confocal laser scanning microscopy, offer new tools in exploration of the structure and function of the inner ear. The optical sectioning property of the confocal microscope enables investigation of living cells deeper within a labeled intact tissue. LÄS MER
