  1. 16. Harbours and Hinterlands : Landscape, Site Patterns and Coast-Hinterland Interconnections by the Corinthian Gulf, c. 600-300 B.C

    Författare :Anton Bonnier; Gunnel Ekroth; James Roy; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Corinthian Gulf; Archaic and Classical-Early Hellenistic Greece; landscape archaeology; site patterns; settlement patterns; harbours; interconnections; connectivity; coastal zones; trade; mountain economies; pastoralism; Archaeology; classical; Arkeologi; klassisk; antikens kultur och samhällsliv; Classical Archaeology and Ancient History;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis examines interconnections between the Corinthian Gulf and its surrounding hinterlands during the Archaic and Classical-Early Hellenistic period, c. 600 to 300 B.C. Interconnections have been studied through site patterns in the surrounding regions. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Effects of community- and government-managed marine protected areas on tropical seagrass and coral communities

    Författare :Angelica Chirico; Johan Eklöf; Nils Kautsky; Even Moland; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal ecosystems; conservation; marine spatial planning; locally managed; fisheries closure; benthic communities; fish; foundation species; macroalgae; secondary succession; life-history; trait variability; plasticity; tourism; human disturbance; fishing; experimental research; Western Indian Ocean; causal modelling; structural equation model; permanova; multivariate data; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Tropical seagrass beds and coral reefs are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems on Earth and provide ecosystem services, such as fish production and coastal protection, and support livelihoods of millions of people. At the same time, these ecosystems are threatened globally by anthropogenic disturbances, such as overfishing, pollution and global warming. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Seagrasses in warming oceans : physiological and biogeochemical responses

    Författare :Rushingisha George; Mats Björk; Martin Gullström; Teresa Alcoverro Pedrola; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Global warming; greenhouse gas; warming oceans; temperate; tropical; coastal waters; Western Indian Ocean WIO ; tidal variability; seagrass; photosynthesis; respiration; photorespiration; biogeochemical processes; sulphide; methane; nitrous oxide; carbon dioxide; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The exponential increase of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations over the past 50 years has caused a rise in the global average temperature by more than 1ºC above pre-industrial levels. Ninety-three percent of this heat energy has been absorbed and stored by the oceans, increasing their temperatures, particularly in surface waters. LÄS MER

  4. 19. On the role of morphometry in coastal ecosystem modelling and management

    Författare :Johan Persson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Sedimentology; sedimentologi;

    Sammanfattning : Many signs show that the Baltic Sea is increasingly eutrophicated. Primary production hasincreased significantly resulting in gradually decreasing deep water oxygen concentrationsduring the twentieth century. In the coastal zone, problems are often manifested as oxygendepletion resulting in extinction of macrobenthic fauna. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Human Impact on Vegetation of Coastal Estonia during the Stone Age

    Författare :Anneli Poska; Dagfinn Moe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Estonia; pollen analysis; Holocene; pre-agrarian human impact; introduction of arable farming; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Quarternary Geology; kvartärgeologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents the dynamics of vegetation and human impact on the environment in coastal Estonia during the Holocene. The sediments of five mires and two lakes from the mainland and from Saaremaa island, and a cultural layer of an Early Mesolithic settlement at Pärnu River were investigated by means of pollen analysis (modern and fossil pollen spectra), 14C dating (AMS and conventional dating) and numerical analysis of pollen data (rarefaction analysis, zonation and principal components analysis).
