  1. 1. Studies of genetic and environmental influences on Parkinson’s disease

    Författare :Karin Wirdefeldt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Parkinson s disease; genetic linkage; autosomal dominant; in situ hybridization; a-Synuclein; twin; heritability; co-twin control; smoking;

    Sammanfattning : Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease. Little is known about the etiology of PD. Although several PD genes are known, these are thought to be involved in only a small proportion of all PD cases. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Socioeconomic influences on late-life health and mortality : exploring genetic and environmental interplay

    Författare :Malin Ericsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis was to increase the understanding of socioeconomic differences in health and mortality in old age - in a genetically informative setting. Data from the Swedish Twin Registry (STR), different statistical methods, and family-based designs were applied to investigate socioeconomic circumstances over the life-course and how these affect cognitive function, frailty, and mortality in late life. 3. 3. Autism spectrum disorder beyond the extreme male brain

    Författare :Jonna Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an umbrella-term for neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by both impairments in communication and social interaction and unusually restricted and repetitive or stereotyped interests and behaviors. Although proven to have a strong genetic etiology, the full biological background of ASD remains unclear. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Gastroesophageal reflux : etiological factors

    Författare :Helena Nordenstedt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Estrogen; gastroesophageal reflux; H. pylori; lifestyles; population-based; postmenopausal hormone therapy; respiratory symptoms; twins;

    Sammanfattning : Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common health problems in the Western world today, affecting up to 20% of the adult population weekly and 50% monthly, generating substantial suffering among patients as well as significant costs to both patients and also to society in general. GERD can result in serious complications such as esophageal strictures, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Exposures in utero and chronic disease : an alternative methodological approach

    Författare :Anna Hübinette; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Cardiovascular disease; acute myocardial infarction; angina pectoris; breast neoplasms; birth weight; birth anthropometrics; twin study; epidemiology; etiology; risk factors; insulin-like growth factors; preeclampsia; longitudinal study.;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to evaluate maternal and birth characteristics as risk factors for breast cancer and cardiovascular disease later in life, and to assess maternal serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factors in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia. Birth characteristics and risks of breast cancer were studied in a case-control study nested within the population-based Swedish Twin Register (Paper 1). LÄS MER
