21. Global Changes and European Terrestrial Ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Global environmental changes are topics of important societal concern and current scientific interest. These changes are driven by many different forcing and feedbacks occurring at various time and geographic scales and are largely influencing the various Earth systems. LÄS MER
22. An Optimisation Approach to Cartographic Generalisation
Sammanfattning : Cartographic generalisation is the process of simplifying a representation to suit the scale and purpose of a map. As such, generalisation has always been a central part in map production. This thesis is a contribution to the ongoing work on automating cartographic generalisation. LÄS MER
23. Towards an integrated ecology through mechanistic modelling of ecosystem structure and functioning
Sammanfattning : Plant physiology, population dynamics and the structure and functioning of ecosystems are closely interrelated. However, these processes are often investigated independently within different subdisciplines of ecology. LÄS MER
24. The Ups and Downs of the Holocene: Exploring Relationships between Global CO2 and Climate Variability in the North Atlantic Region
Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed to examine the relationship between climate and atmospheric CO2 concentrations through rapid climate changes during the Holocene. Climate was reconstructed using high-resolution, radiocarbon dated, lake sediment geochemical proxies (magnetic susceptibility, loss-on-ignition, total carbon/nitrogen/sulphur determinations and biogenic silica), vegetational reconstruction (pollen analysis) and stomatal frequency based CO2 reconstructions. 25. Urban Design and Outdoor Thermal Comfort in Warm Climates. Studies in Fez and Colombo
Sammanfattning : In many developing tropical countries, rapid urban growth leads to several problems, including increased thermal stress. This has negative consequences for people's health and well-being, and affects social and commercial outdoor activities negatively. LÄS MER
