1. Moisture-induced stress and distortion of wood : A numerical and experimental study of wood's drying and long-term behaviour
Sammanfattning : With the current advances made in three-dimensional modelling of wood, it is possible to provide an overall picture of moisture flow, and moisture-induced stress and deformations, whereas previously, experiments only provided local measurements. The main aim of the doctoral thesis is to investigate the possibilities of the developed three-dimensional numerical model to predict the behaviour of wood when simultaneously exposed to a mechanical load and a particular climate. 2. Laminated Veneer Products : Shape Stability and Effect of Enhanced Formability on Bond-Line Strength
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns two aspects of the manufacture of laminated veneer products (LVPs). The first aspect is related to the possible improvement of the shape stability of LVPs, and the second has its starting point in the modification of the veneer for enhanced formability as well as the question of whether and how these modifications affect the bond-line strength. 3. On colour changes during kiln drying of hardwood : with special reference to beech and birch
Sammanfattning : Kiln drying is a key factor for the utilisation of our hardwood forest resources, providing our industry with high quality raw material. The increased use of transparent surface treatment in the furniture and carpentry industries during the last decades has put an increased focus on wood colour. LÄS MER
4. Time-dependent climate impact of production and use of wood pellets from short rotation forestry and logging residues
Sammanfattning : Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the main cause of climate change, with combustion of fossil fuels and land use changes being the main source of emissions. Wood pellets are considered a viable replacement for fossil fuels. Therefore this thesis sought to increase the knowledge base for planning new wood pellet systems. LÄS MER
5. Investigating the Reaction Kinetics of Tropical Wood Biomass : A Prospect for Energy Recovery
Sammanfattning : The utilization of wood biomass for energy recovery purposes is a phenomenon that is increasingly attracting attentions from researchers, companies and countries all over the world. The effect of climate change as largely represented by global warming leading to glacier ice melting and an unprecedented rise in sea level is a worrisome development. LÄS MER
