1. The Influence of Polyelectrolytes on the Stability of Colloids
Sammanfattning : The interaction between two colloids with grafted polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution is studied within the primitive model by Monte Carlo simulations. For neutral colloids with grafted polyelectrolytes and in absence of salt the interaction is strongly repulsive in absence of salt. LÄS MER
2. Crystallization of the superconducting phase in unconventional superconductors
Sammanfattning : Superconductivity is a macroscopic quantum phenomenon, in the sense that a macroscopic number of electrons form a pair condensate, that occupies a single ground state. The electrons in this state are phase-coherent, breaking global U (1)-symmetry, and spatial variations of the phase imply superflows that usually cost kinetic energy, resulting in a uniform and rigid phase. 3. Structure and Phase Stability of Polyelectrolyte-Macroion Solutions
Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolytes are polymers bearing ionisable groups, which, in polar solvents, can dissociate into charged polymer chains (polyelectrolytes) and small counterions. In aqueous solutions, polyelectrolytes interact strongly with other macroions and in particular they tend to associate with objects of opposite charge and form complexes. LÄS MER
4. Preparation of New Catalytic Materials by Small Particle Technology
Sammanfattning : New techniques for preparation of catalytic materials with novel properties are presented in this thesis. Three new catalytic materials; washcoated fibres, highly dispersed metal oxides on titania coated silica particles and discrete colloidal ZSM-5 crystals with a low SiO2/Al2O3 ratio have been prepared and characterised. 5. Magnetic Bicrystal Junctions - a Study of Half-Metallic Manganite Grain Boundaries
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents studies on magnetic bicrystal junctions. In these, films on either side of the junction are structurally and magnetically misoriented. This type of device enables us to study junction magnetoresistance and spin polarized charge transport between ferromagnets with well defined directions of magnetization. LÄS MER
