6. The Structural Modularity and Inherent Dynamics of the DegP Protease together with its Intertwined Role in the Bacterial Periplasm
Sammanfattning : The protein quality control machinery is a delicate and integrated network of molecular tools working together to fold or remove unwanted proteins from the cell. A distinct set of “gatekeepers” are involved in this process including molecular chaperones, proteases, oxidoreductases, transferases, and many others in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. 7. Molecular Aspects of Transthyretin Amyloid Disease
Sammanfattning : This thesis was made to get a deeper understanding of how chaperones interact with unstable, aggregation prone, misfolded proteins involved in human disease. Over the last two decades, there has been much focus on misfolding diseases within the fields of biochemistry and molecular biotechnology research. LÄS MER
8. Polyelectrolytes and Polycomplexes in Biotechnology
Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolytes and polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are characterized by many useful properties that endow them with high potential in different areas of biotechnology. This thesis describes the development and analyses of some new systems and methods utilizing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA), poly (N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide) (PEVP) and PMA-PEVP complexes. 9. Clusterin and Megalin in The Spinal Cord
Sammanfattning : Nerve injury induces up-regulation of the chaperone protein clusterin in affected neurons and adjacent astrocytes but the functional significance of this response is unclear. We find that motor neuron survival is significantly greater in clusterin(+/+) compared to (-/-) mice. LÄS MER
10. Type III secretion- the various functions of the translocon operon in bacterial pathogenesis
Sammanfattning : In order to establish colonisation of a human host, pathogenic Yersinia use a type III protein secretion system to directly intoxicate host immune cells. Activation of this system requires target cell contact and is a highly regulated process. LÄS MER
