1. Artificial intelligence in weather and climate prediction : Learning atmospheric dynamics
Sammanfattning : Weather and climate prediction is dominated by high dimensionality, interactions on many different spatial and temporal scales and chaotic dynamics. This makes many problems in the field quite complex ones, and also state-of-the-art numerical models are - despite their immense computational costs - not sufficient for many applications. LÄS MER
2. Nonlinear dynamics of strongly-bound magnetic vortex pairs
Sammanfattning : This work is a study of nonlinear phenomena in vertically stacked pairs of magnetic vortices. New dynamic regimes are uncovered with a decrease in the inter-vortex separation to below the lateral vortex-core size. LÄS MER
3. On the phase-space distribution of heavy particles in turbulence
Sammanfattning : Turbulent fluids laden with small, heavy particles are common in nature. Prominent examples of such turbulent suspensions are water droplets in warm clouds, as well as particulate matter or living organisms in the turbulent upper layer of oceans. LÄS MER
4. The Dynamical Spin Vector Evolution of the Asteroids
Sammanfattning : The dynamical evolution of the spin axis direction due to gravitational and thermal factors is examined. It is found that the spin axis variations generally are regular and relatively small for the bodies in the asteroid main belt. There are also reasons to believe that this is the case for minor objects beyond the main belt. LÄS MER
5. Global bifurcations and chaotic dynamics in physical applications
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work has been to analyse global bifurcations arising in a laser with injectedsignal and in a catalytic reaction on a surface of Pt, from the point of view of dynamicalsystems theory. The 3-dimensional ordinary differential equation which models the laser was found to contain a homoclinic orbit to a saddle-focus equilibrium, what corresponds to the Šil´nikov phenomenon.
