  1. 1. Whiplash injury : a clinical, radiographic and psychological investigation

    Författare :Kurt Pettersson; Seppo Santavirta; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cervical spine; whiplash injury; MRI; personality traits; steroid therapy; sagittal canal diameter; chronic symptoms;

    Sammanfattning : Whiplash injury is a common and troublesome disorder and approximately 10-40 per cent of its victims develop chronic symptoms. The annual incidence is estimated at 1/1000 inhabitants and the prevalence at 1%. The cause of chronic symptoms after whiplash injury is still unknown and no effective treatment has been presented so far. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Upper extremity functioning in individuals with cervical or thoracic spinal cord injury - From body functions to participation

    Författare :Lamprini Lili; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; activity; autonomy; capacity; functioning; participation; performance; spinal cord injury; upper extremity;

    Sammanfattning : Background: A spinal cord injury (SCI) can lead to a range of impairments in various body functions, including the function of upper extremity, with severity varying from mild to severe. Long-term consequences for functioning and disability are a dynamic result of the injury characteristics and various other factors, requiring further knowledge regarding upper extremity functioning. 3. 3. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Författare :Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 4. 4. The use of adipose derived stem cells in spinal cord and peripheral nerve repair

    Författare :Mallappa K Kolar; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; adipose derived stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Sammanfattning : Clinically, injuries affecting the spinal cord or peripheral nerves can leave those affected with severe disability and, at present, there are limited options for treatment. Peripheral nerve injury with a significant gap between the proximal and distal stumps is currently treated with autologous nerve grafting but this is limited by availability of donor nerve and has associated morbidities. 5. 5. Spasticity : an elusive problem after spinal cord injury

    Författare :Camilla Sköld; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to characterize spasticity in individuals and in a near total prevalence population with traumatic spinal cord (SCI) injury by assessment of: Article I) Relation between Self-reporting of symptoms, neurologic examination (ASIA), physical therapy examination, ROM and complications; Article II) Repeated self-rating (VAS), and the relation between movement- provoked MAS rating and self-rating after a repetitive passive movement intervention; Article III) Correlation between movement-provoked MAS rating during simultaneous recording of EMG thigh muscle activity; Article IV) Correlation between Isokinetic movement-provoked resistive torque measurements during recording of EMG thigh muscle activity; and Article V) FES induced changes in body composition evaluated by CT and in spasticity by using the methods from articles II-IV. Article I comprised the near-total prevalence population (n=354) of individuals with traumatic SCI in Stockholm. LÄS MER
