6. Studies on cytokines and chemokines in cerebrovascular diseases and experimental cerebral ischemia
Sammanfattning : Ischemic brain injury secondary to arterial occlusion, a major cause of stroke, is characterized by acute local inflammation, which involves the accumulation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and other immune cells. Tissue damage resulting from ischemic stroke can be reduced in experimental animal models by blocking leukocyte accumulation. LÄS MER
7. Stroke : patient characteristics, efficacy of a stroke unit and evaluation of hemodilution therapy
Sammanfattning : Stroke is a major health problem in all developed countries. These studies, performed in a stroke unit at a medical department, were designed to characterize essential clinical features of the different cerebrovascular disorders on admission to hospital, to evaluate the efficacy of admitting unselected stroke patients to a stroke unit and, to evaluate hemodilution as a therapeutical regime in patients with cerebral infarction. 8. Blood pressure in acute ischaemic stroke : blood pressure and stress in the acute phase of stroke and influence of initial blood pressure on stroke-outcome
Sammanfattning : Background and objectives: Most patients (70-80%) with acute ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke exhibit a high systemic blood pressure (BP) on admission to hospital even in the absence of a history of hypertension (=50%). In matched-control patients admitted to hospital for other acute diseases the proportion of high BP is only 36%. LÄS MER
9. Natural course and long-term prognosis in idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus - the effect of delayed surgery and clinical factors on outcome and survival
Sammanfattning : Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, iNPH, causes gait and balance difficulties, urinary incontinence and cognitive decline in mainly older persons and is treatable by insertion of a cerebrospinal fluid diverting shunt. The effects of postponing treatment in these patients have have been largely unknown and the benefits of treatment in the long-term, mortality and causes of death have not been reported in any large cohort of patients. 10. Neuroimmunological and clinical studies in neuropsychiatric lupus erythematosus (NPSLE)
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with many organ manifestations and characteristic immunological abnormities including a large set of autoantibodies with affinity for nuclear and membrane components. Autoantibodies form immune complexes, which cause inflammation and tissue damage in affected organs. LÄS MER
