16. On severe traumatic brain injury : aspects of an intra cranial pressure-targeted therapy based on the Lund concept
Sammanfattning : Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (sTBI) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. At the Department of Neurosurgery Umeå University Hospital subjects with sTBI are treated with an intracranial pressure (ICP) guided therapy based on physiological principles, aiming to optimise the microcirculation of the brain so avoiding secondary brain injuries. 17. The Neurological Wake-up Test in Neurocritical Care
Sammanfattning : The neurological wake-up test, NWT, is a clinical monitoring tool that can be used to evaluate the level of consciousness in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) during neurocritical care (NCC). Since patients with severe TBI or SAH are often treated with mechanical ventilation and sedation, the NWT requires that the continuous sedation is interrupted. LÄS MER
18. Quality systems to avoid secondary brain injury in neurointensive care
Sammanfattning : Outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) depends on the extent of primary cell death and on the development of secondary brain injury. The general aim of this thesis was to find strategies and quality systems to minimize the extent of secondary insults in neurointensive care (NIC). LÄS MER
19. Studies on inflammation in the acute phase of aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Sammanfattning : Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) accounts for 5% of all strokes and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Rupture of intracranial aneurysm is the cause in 85% of cases. LÄS MER
20. Modeling disturbances of cholinergic systems : possible relevance for schizophrenia
Sammanfattning : Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic mental disorder. The etiology remains unknown but alterations in cholinergic neurotransmission is one, among other, disturbances in the brain that have been implicated in schizophrenia. LÄS MER
