11. Aspects of Induced Hypothermia following Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation : Cerebral and Cardiovascular Effects
Sammanfattning : Hypothermia treatment with cooling to a body temperature of 32-34°C has been shown to be an effective way of improving neurological outcome and survival in unconscious patients successfully resuscitated after cardiac arrest (CA). The method is used clinically but there are still many questions on the biological mechanisms and on how the treatment is best performed. LÄS MER
12. Cerebral Perfusion and Metabolism during Experimental Extracorporeal Circulation
Sammanfattning : Neurologic injuries are major causes of mortality and morbidity after cardiac surgery. This thesis aimed to investigate cerebral metabolism and perfusion abnormalities in pigs during hypothermic circulatory arrest, selective antegrade cerebral perfusion (SACP) and extracorporeal circulation following progressive venous stasis. 13. Metabolic and Endocrine Response in the Acute Stage of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Sammanfattning : The rupture of an aneurysm in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a dramatic event causing a severe impact on the brain and a transient or permanent ischemic condition. Several types of responses to meet the challenges of SAH have been found in the acute phase, including activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system, elevated levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and disturbances in cerebral and systemic metabolism. 14. Monitoring of extracellular substances after spontaneous and experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage
Sammanfattning : Even though survival is considerably enhanced after surgical treatment of an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), there is a critical period, which keeps the patient in intensive care for days or even weeks. Complications, such as vasospasm, ischemia and brain edema ultimately lead to further brain damage. LÄS MER
15. The role of reactive oxygen species in traumatic brain injury : Experimental studies in the rat
Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of mortality and disability. As common sequelae in survivors of TBI are disabling functional, emotional and cognitive disturbances, improved treatment of TBI patients is urgently needed. At present, no neuroprotective pharmacological treatment exists. LÄS MER
