11. Alkaline Sphingomyelinase; A Potential Inhibitor in Colorectal Carcinogenesis
Sammanfattning : Sphingomyelin (SM) is present both in eucaryotic cells and the diet. Sphingomyelinase (SMase) hydrolyses SM and generates ceramide that has been implicated in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. Previously a SMase with alkaline pH optimum was identified in the intestinal tract. LÄS MER
12. On the role of bioactive sphingolipids and their metabolizing enzymes in cancer
Sammanfattning : Ceramide is a family of closely related molecules, which are presumed to be in the center of sphingolipid metabolism. Among sphingolipid metabolites, several ceramide subspecies and sphingosine induce apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and death, whereas sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) mediates cell proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis. 13. Mucosal receptors involved in pathogen recognition and host defence
Sammanfattning : Urinary tract infection is the most common infection in man. P fimbriae are virulence factors of uro-pathogenic Escherichia coli. They are expressed by 70-90 % of acute pyelonephritis isolates and up to 100% of the most virulent isolates that cause bacteremia. LÄS MER
14. Role of TLR4 in Escherichia coli urinary tract infection
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we have used P fimbriated E. coli as a model to investigate the mechanisms of bacterial recognition and cell activation by the urinary tract (UT) epithelium. We show that Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) is crucial for the recognition and host response to P fimbriated E. coli. LÄS MER
15. Synthesis of Conformationally Restricted Oligosaccharides
Sammanfattning : Gangliosides are sialic acid-containing glycosphingolipids that often are present in increased amounts on tumor cells. Since the gangliosides are hydroxy-acids, they can form lactones. The lactones have been suspected to be more immunogenic than the open forms, but are in practise poor immunogens due to their ease of hydrolysis. LÄS MER
