  1. 1. Statistical Seismology Studies in Central America : b-value, seismic hazard and seismic quiescence

    Författare :David Aníbal Monterroso Juárez; Ota Kulhánek; Stefan Wiemer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; b-value; seismic hazard; Monte Carlo; seismic quiescence; Central America; stress; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis collects results of research applying theory and methods of statistical seismology to the seismicity of Central America, a region with a complex tectonic setting controlled by the interaction of four major plates, namely the Caribbean, Cocos, Nazca and North American plates.Three different earthquake catalogues were used for studies focused on stress in a tectonic volume, seismic hazard maps and seismicity patterns (precursors), covering the region 94ºW to 81ºW and 5ºN to 20ºN. 2. 2. The venous circulation in teleost fish -responses to exercise, temperature and hypoxia

    Författare :Erik Sandblom; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; blood volume; catecholamines; central venous pressure; exercise; hypoxia; mean circulatory filling pressure; preload; renin-angiotensin; temperature; vascular capacitance.;

    Sammanfattning : Sandblom, Erik (2007). The venous circulation in teleost fish -Responses to exercise, temperature and hypoxia. Department of Zoology/Zoophysiology, Göteborg University, Box 463, SE-405 30 Göteborg, Sweden. In fish and other vertebrates, venous capacitance changes have important implications on venous return and cardiac filling pressure. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Volume kinetics of glucose solutions given by intravenous infusion

    Författare :Fredrik Sjöstrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Volume kinetics; osmosis; dehydration; rehydration; glucose solutions; glucose; hypovolemia; hypoglycemia; fluids; intravenous fluid therapy; fluid shifts; plasma volume; dilution; plasma dilution; intracellular hydration; central volume.;

    Sammanfattning : Fluid therapy is often cumbersome to plan since the distribution and the elimination of the administered solution are difficult to analyze in the clinical setting. The knowledge of the adequate rate and dose for each individual patient and under various physiological conditions would be very attractive to obtain in order to avoid fluid overload and hyperglycemia. 4. 4. Ethanol-mediated effects on astroglial cells in primary culture. With a focus on acute changes in intracellular Ca2+, cell volume, actin filaments, and gap junction coupling

    Författare :Louise Adermark; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; astrocyte; BaCl2; cell swelling; fura-2; furosemide; ouabain; scrape loading; volume estimation;

    Sammanfattning : The astroglial cells are abundant in the central nervous system (CNS), where they control and regulate the homeostasis of the extracellular milieu. A change in astroglial cell volume, mediated through activation of neuroactive substances or changes in osmolarity, leads to changes in the size and geometry of the extracellular space volume, which could affect the diffusion and concentration of neuroactive substances. 5. 5. PET evaluation of central serotonergic neurotransmission in women

    Författare :Hristina Jovanovic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :PET; serotonin; 5-HT1A receptor; 5-HTT; WAY100635; MADAM; premenstrual dysphoric disorder; borderline personality disorder; gonadal hormones;

    Sammanfattning : The serotonin (5-HT) system is of central interest in the patophysiology and treatment of several psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety and suicide. In women, functioning of the 5-HT system is of particular importance since they have been found to suffer more often from 5-HT-associated disorders compared to men. LÄS MER
