  1. 1. Heparan Sulfate in the Amyloidosis and Inflammation of Alzheimer’s Disease

    Författare :Paul O'Callaghan; Xiao Zhang; Lars Lannfelt; Jeremy Turnbull; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; amyloidosis; amyloid-β; apolipoprotein E; astrocytes; glia; heparanase; heparan sulfate; heparan sulfate proteoglycans; microglia; neuroinflammation; Geriatrics; Geriatrik; Cellforskning; Cell Research; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; Pathology; Patologi;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, with extensive evidence implicating the misfolding, aggregation and deposition of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide as central to the pathogenesis. Heparan sulfate (HS) is an interactive glycosaminoglycan, attached to core proteins as HS proteoglycans (HSPGs). LÄS MER

  2. 2. Targeted Abeta proteomics - A tool to study the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease

    Författare :Erik Portelius; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Alzheimer’s disease; Cerebrospinal fluid; Immunoprecipitation; Mass spectrometry; beta-amyloid;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Diagnosis and monitoring of sporadic AD has long depended on clinical examination of individuals with end-stage disease. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Heat exposure and health outcomes in Costa Rican sugarcane harvesters

    Författare :Jennifer Crowe; Maria Nilsson; Tord Kjellström; Catharina Wesseling; Linda Forst; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Agricultural worker; Central America; Chronic kidney disease; Climate change; Dehydration; Heat; Heat illness; Heat stress; Sugarcane; Urinalysis; Worker health; folkhälsa; Public health; Epidemiology; epidemiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Background The remarkably efficient mechanisms of the human body to maintain its core temperature of 37°C can be inadequate when harsh climatic conditions and excessive muscle movement lead to heat stress, dehydration and potential heat illness, ranging from minor symptoms such as fatigue to a potentially fatal heat stroke. Agricultural workers in the tropics are at high risk, which is expected to increase with climate change. LÄS MER

  4. 4. SOD1 prions transmit templated aggregation and fatal ALS-like disease

    Författare :Elaheh Ekhtiari Bidhendi; Thomas Brännström; Stefan L. Marklund; Peter M. Andersen; Inger Nennesmo; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; SOD1; prion; neurodegeneration; strain; seeding; protein misfolding; protein aggregation; propagation; transgenic mice; Pathology; patologi; Neurology; neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult-onset fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by a progressive degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons. The resulting paresis begins focally, usually in one muscle, and spreads contiguously, leading to muscle wasting, progressive paralysis and eventually death. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Design and Synthesis of Aspartic and Serine Protease Inhibitors : Targeting the BACE-1 and the HCV NS3 Protease

    Författare :Fredrik Wångsell; Mats Larhed; Jari Yli-Kauhaluoma; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; BACE-1; transition state mimetic; tertiary hydroxyl group; hydroxyethylene; statine; hydroxyethylamine; hepatitis C; HCV NS3; bioisostere; protease inhibitor.; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Läkemedelskemi; Medicinal Chemistry; Läkemedelskemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes work done to design and synthesize protease inhibitors, with the intention of developing therapeutic agents for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and the chronic liver condition caused by infection of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). AD is the most common form of dementia, and HCV infection is the primary reason for liver transplantation in industrialized countries. LÄS MER
