  1. 16. Effects of Enterovirus Infection on Innate Immunity and Beta Cell Function in Human Islets of Langerhans

    Författare :Oskar Skog; Gun Frisk; Olle Korsgren; Åke Lernmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; Enterovirus; Coxsackievirus; Innate immunity; Pancreatic islets; Islet function; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on enteroviral effects on human pancreatic islets. Most knowledge of viral effects on host cells relies on studies of immortalized cell lines or animal models. The islets represent a fundamentally different and less well studied cellular host. Also, enterovirus has been implicated in the etiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D). LÄS MER

  2. 17. Isoform-specific regulation of Drosophila gut immunity and regeneration by the POU/Oct transcription factor Nub/Pdm1

    Författare :Xiongzhuo Tang; Ylva Engström; Tony Ip; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; POU; Nubbin; Drosophila; intestinal stem cell; epithelium regeneration; midgut; mitosis; Antimicrobial peptides; innate immunity; NF-κB; bacterial infection; transcriptional regulation; homeostasis; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Innate immune reactions protect organisms against a variety of infections.  In metazoans, these reactions involve both cellular and humoral responses. The immune responses have to be well-tuned, as excessive immune activation is associated with tissue-specific pathologies. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Role of innate cellular immunity in the immunopathogenesis of HIV-1 infection in Uganda

    Författare :Proscovia Naluyima Sekiziyivu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The global epidemic of HIV has resulted in more than 34 million deaths and currently 36.9 million HIV-infected people worldwide. Uganda has an HIV prevalence of 7.3%, equating to about 1. LÄS MER

  4. 19. DNA vaccines and bacterial DNA in immunity

    Författare :Lisa Charlotta Bandholtz; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :DNA vaccine; CpG DNA; antimicrobial peptides C. pneumoniae; Shigella spp;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes DNA-based vaccination and the importance of bacterial DNA in different immunological perspectives. Intranasal (i.n.) DNA vaccination utilizing a plasmid encoding the chlamydial heat shock protein 60 (p-hsp-60) generated lower bacterial burden and reduced pathology in the lungs of mice after subsequent infection with C. 5. 20. Immunity against porcine islet xenografts in man

    Författare :Ellinor Lindeborg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Pig islets xenotransplantation; Type 1 diabetes; xenoimmune antibodies; IgG1; T cells.;

    Sammanfattning : Due to the lack of organs for clinical transplantation, alternative sources have been investigated. One solution to this shortage could be xenotransplantation, i.e. the transplantation of organs/cells across species barriers. LÄS MER
