11. Studies on Tissue Factor with Focus on Cell Signaling and Cancer
Sammanfattning : This thesis have explored the functions of the protein Tissue Factor (TF), which together with its ligand coagulation factor VII/VIIa (FVII/FVIIa) forms a proteolytic complex that functions in initiation of blood coagulation and activation of cell signaling. In paper I, the mechanisms behind the observation that TF/FVIIa signaling protects cells from apoptosis were further investigated. 12. Exploring the tissue-specific nature of the Wnt cell signaling system : The complex world of cell communication and the search for the Achilles heel of cancer
Sammanfattning : The Wnt signaling pathway is a biological mechanism for cell-cell communication found across all species of the animal kingdom. This pathway plays a major role in virtually all stages of embryonic development, and it governs central aspects of stem cell biology, regeneration, and tissue homeostasis. LÄS MER
13. Oscillatory Signaling and Insulin Secretion from Single ß-cells
Sammanfattning : cAMP and Ca2+ are key regulators of exocytosis in many cells, including insulin-secreting pancreatic β-cells. Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from β-cells is pulsatile and driven by oscillations of the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), but little is known about the kinetics of cAMP signaling and the mechanisms of cAMP action. 14. Diversification of TGF-β Signaling in Homeostasis and Disease
Sammanfattning : With the dawn of metazoans, the ability of cells to communicate with each other became of paramount importance in maintaining tissue homeostasis. The transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signaling pathway, which plays important roles during embryogenesis and in the adult organism, signals via a heterodimeric receptor complex consisting of two type II and two type I receptors. 15. Biological consequences of endothelial cell signaling
Sammanfattning : Endothelial cells make up the inner lining of blood and lymphatic vessels, where they participate in functions vital to survival of the tissue; endothelial cells maintain vessel integrity, dynamically respond to the changing metabolic needs of tissues, and participate in many tissue-specific functions. Endothelial cells sense environmental cues which initiate signal transduction pathways that regulate behavior. LÄS MER
