21. Neurotoxicity of methylmercury : analysis of molecular mechanisms and behavioral alterations
Sammanfattning : MethyImercury (MeHg) is a global pollutant that is toxic for the nervous system, especially during development. Contaminated fish is the main route of human exposure. Recent studies have indicated that neurological alterations in humans may occur even after exposure to fairly low levels of MeHg. LÄS MER
22. Neuronal Cell Death and Restoration in the Basal Ganglia: Implications for Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases
Sammanfattning : Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder presenting with chorea, dementia and extensive striatal neuronal death. The mechanism through which the widely expressed mutant huntingtin mediates striatal neurotoxicity is unknown. Excitotoxicity, i.e. LÄS MER
23. Anti-Apoptotic Proteins in Nerve Cell Survival and Neurodegeneration
Sammanfattning : Apoptosis is a genetically regulated cell death program, which shows distinct morphological characteristics. It takes place during neuronal development and in some neurodegenerative diseases. During apoptosis, the intracellular proteins are degraded by various caspases, cysteine aspartases, which are regulated by pro- and anti-apoptotic signals. LÄS MER
24. Pharmacological Studies of CHS 828 and Etoposide Induced Tumour Cell Death
Sammanfattning : Antitumour properties of the cyanoguanidine CHS 828 and analogues were discovered in 1997. CHS 828 is presently in clinical phase I/II trials. This thesis encompasses in vitro studies of the kinetics and mode of cell death induced in the human cell line U-937 GTB, by CHS 828 and the standard antitumour drug etoposide. LÄS MER
25. Cell death and signal transduction pathways in Alzheimer's disease : the role of presenilin 1
Sammanfattning : Mutated presenilins (PSs) may cause familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) by altering neuronal signal transduction pathways, by increasing AP production or by triggering a number of proapoptotic mechanisms. The present thesis explores mechanisms by which PSs regulate signal transduction and cell death with relevance to AD. LÄS MER
