21. Expression profiling of human macrophages and atherosclerotic plaques to identify genes and mechanisms that modulate the development of atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Macrophages play an important role in atherosclerosis, a disease that affects large and medium size arteries and causes clinical manifestations such as myocardial infarction or stroke. The aim of this thesis was to identify genes that are important in the development of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER
22. Interleukin 16 in Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease
Sammanfattning : Background and aim - The development of clinical manifectations due to an eroded or ruptured atherosclerotic plaque, or occluded vessel, are one of the major causes of death world wide. It has been known for some time that atherosclerosis develops due to retention and modification of LDL particles in the vessel wall and the subsequent triggering of the immune system. LÄS MER
23. Studies on stable angina pectoris : risk indicators, prognosis and effects of verapamil or metoprolol treatment
Sammanfattning : Hemostatic and fibrinolytic variables, inflammatory parameters, catecholamines and lipid parameters were studied at baseline, in a long-term prospective study of 809 patients with stable angina pectoris, and compared to results obtained in healthy control subjects (n=50). The prognostic implications of the various parameters at baseline were evaluated, as well as possible influences of drug treatment on these variables and their prognostic implications were studied. 24. Studies on arterial endothelial function and intima-media thickness using ultrasound technique
Sammanfattning : Background: The development of ultrasonographic arterial imaging, high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography, has created a technical basis for a new diagnostic approach to atherosclerotic disease by offering the possibility of accurate and reproducible quantification of the structural and functional changes in the arterial wall. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) have been shown to be good surrogate markers of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER
25. Cell death in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Rupture of atherosclerotic lesions is recognized as the major cause of acute cerebrovascular and coronary syndromes. The characteristics of the typical vulnerable plaque include increased inflammatory cells at the shoulder region, a large lipid core, a thin fibrous cap with few collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells.
