21. Cost-effectiveness and Value of Further Research of Treatment Strategies for Cardiovascular Disease
Sammanfattning : Economic evaluations provide a tool to estimate costs and health consequences of competing medical technologies, ultimately to aid decision makers when deciding which medical technologies should be funded from available resources. Such decisions inevitably need to be taken under uncertainty and it is not clear how to approach them in health care decision-making. LÄS MER
22. Carotid atherosclerosis in relation to socioeconomic status and gender. With special reference to the mediating role of health-related behaviours and psychosocial stressors
Sammanfattning : The declining trend in cardiovascular mortality rates seen since the mid-1970s in Western countries have been more pronounced for people in higher socioeconomic status (SES) groups. The fact that established risk factors, are limited in explaining the socioeconomic differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) has opened new fields of research. LÄS MER
23. Studies on arterial endothelial function and intima-media thickness using ultrasound technique
Sammanfattning : Background: The development of ultrasonographic arterial imaging, high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography, has created a technical basis for a new diagnostic approach to atherosclerotic disease by offering the possibility of accurate and reproducible quantification of the structural and functional changes in the arterial wall. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) have been shown to be good surrogate markers of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER
24. Progressive stroke : clinical course and outcome
Sammanfattning : The knowledge about progression of symptoms in acute stroke patients was scanty when this thesis was planned. The aim was therefore to study if the rate and type of progression, had any impact on patient outcome, predictors for progression and effectiveness of heparin treatment. LÄS MER
25. Cell death in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Rupture of atherosclerotic lesions is recognized as the major cause of acute cerebrovascular and coronary syndromes. The characteristics of the typical vulnerable plaque include increased inflammatory cells at the shoulder region, a large lipid core, a thin fibrous cap with few collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells.
